we need to talk about Kevin

Three-lion-tattooed, skunk-haired cricketer Kevin “KP” Pieterson  appears to have made his last appearance for England after being dropped for the last test match followed today by his non-selection for the world 20-20 squad.  He is undoubtedly one of the most talented cricketers of the modern era; his unorthodox, destructive style has entertained crowds around the world as well as being central to England’s rise up the world rankings.  The problem with Kev is that his ego seems as big as his ability; he has upset members of every dressing room he has been part of and has been described as obsessed with money and celebrity.  His bat was destroyed and thrown from the balcony when he left Notts and his England colleagues seem less than delighted in his company.  His first ball duck for Surrey on Sunday was greeted with the bizarre sight of middle aged, cricket fans jumping up and down and jeering as if we had just won the world cup.  At the centre of his latest headline grabbing behaviour is the ubiquitous texting; he sent messages to the South African team during matches. The texts have been described variously  as “banter”, “provocative” and “derogatory” although he has refused to fill in the details.  As the old corny saying goes “there is no I in team”; there is, however, a “me” if you look hard enough.  KP has committed the heinous sports-sins of letting down his team mates and being guilty of playing for himself; hard to see a way back for him now.
