We could be heroes

I wrote about King Arthur Scargill last week as the (former) hero of mine hung his true colours from the mast and turned on his Union comrades for personal gain; this week the late Jimmy Savile has been thoroughly disgraced and removed permanently from the “national treasure” list and now, to cap a terrible week for heroes, Lance Armstrong has finally been outed as a drug cheat.  Armstrong was a hero to many; he successfully overcame cancer and dominated the toughest race in the world, the Tour De France a mind-boggling seven times.  The rumours, counter rumours, accusations and denials have finally been put to rest and Armstrong has been found out.  A cheating, doping, coercing bastion of cycling.  One of his most famous quotes “It’s not about the bike…” still holds true but it seems it was also about much more than God given talent and almost superman qualities of determination and fitness.  A lot of cycling fans will be distraught at the news; many of them kept believing right to the bitter end, they now must deal with the truth.  Heroes; do they all let us down in the end?
