Strainsview has occasionally been accused of overt cynicism so today lets have three cheers and hats in the air for one of the most amazing feats in the history of mankind.  Felix Baumgartner’s “sky-fall” feat yesterday was worth all the hype and excitement that surrounded it.  His falling from the sky trick was an incredible piece of modern achievement.  Rather like the first mountaineers to conquer the world’s toughest peaks or the Victorian explorers who tramped into previously unvisited continental interiors he really did boldly go where no man had gone before.  The numbers are mind-numbingly impressive; a falling speed of 833 miles an hour, a height of 24 miles (!) and a fall-time of nearly 10 minutes are unsurpassed and likely to remain so for the foreseeable future.  Incredible stuff that gladdens the heart and shows us that “impossible” human endeavours still have the capacity to thrill and amaze.  Also nice to see that the latest James Bond franchise film has celebrated the human rockets achievement.

Amazing – what a brave man. I guess with a name like his, he was destined to become famous !
